Suacium, Shestani & Krajina Experience
Step beyond the ordinary and explore one of the most authentic cultural journeys in Montenegro. This full-day heritage experience takes you through the ancient ruins of Suacium — the lost medieval city today known as Shas, Šas and Svac — as well as selected places in the historic regions of Shestani and Krajina, where centuries of history, spirituality, language and Mediterranean traditions still live on.
Hidden between the peaceful lake, rolling hills and centuries-old stone walls, Suacium offers a unique atmosphere where history and nature meet. Walk through the remains of the forgotten medieval city, discover stories of ancient trade routes, forgotten traditions and local legends, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over one of the most authentic landscapes in Montenegro.
But this journey goes beyond history alone. During the experience, guests will also discover the cultural and linguistic heritage connected to the Adriatic world of the 16th century — a time when the first known book written in Albanian, Meshari (1555) by Gjon Buzuku, marked the beginning of the written Albanian language.
As part of the storytelling experience, guests will learn how this entire region — including Ulcinj, Shestani and Krajina — once belonged to a vibrant Adriatic cultural network connected to Venice and the Mediterranean world.
At that time, the Adriatic Sea was not simply water — it was a cultural route.
Ulcinj was connected with Venice and the cities across the sea. Books were not printed here, but they were sent across the Adriatic for publication.
This carefully designed full-day experience also includes visits to:
- The traditional Heritage House in Draginja, where guests will experience authentic local architecture, traditions and the spirit of old rural life.
- Selected places in the historic regions of Shestani and Krajina.
Along the way, guests will enjoy local hospitality, breathtaking landscapes and authentic regional gastronomy.
The experience also includes a traditional meal at a local restaurant, offering an authentic taste of the culture and heritage of the region. Guests will have the opportunity to try homemade pie, traditional local cake, local wine and locally crafted quince brandy while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of rural Montenegro.

Itinerary
Our journey begins with a visit to the Ethnographic Museum in Draginë / Draginje, where guests will discover local heritage, rural architecture, and the spirit of old village life. Here, the owner of Draginë Guest House will welcome us with homemade pie, traditional local cake, and locally crafted quince brandy.
From Draginja, we continue to the medieval city of Šas / Suacium, located approximately 5 km from the museum. Here, guests will explore the remains of this lost medieval town and learn about its history, legends, and connection with the wider Adriatic world.
After visiting Šas, we return to Vladimir by a different route, passing through the peaceful natural landscapes of Ana e Malit. From Vladimir, we continue in the direction of Krajina. Our next stop is Shtegvasha, a beautiful panoramic viewpoint offering breathtaking views over Lake Skadar, the city of Shkodër, Ulcinj, and Velika Plaža. On clear days, the view can extend as far as Durrës in Albania.
We then continue toward Ostros, with a stop in the village of Boljaj, known for its traditional wells and the peaceful natural landscape surrounding them. This area is also marked by impressive old chestnut trees, whose wide crowns provide shade and give the village a timeless rural atmosphere. These chestnut groves are an important part of the local landscape and traditional life of Krajina.
After Boljaj, we continue to Ostros, where we make a short stop at Ubla e Krajës and the remains of Kisha e Shën Mërisë, two places connected with the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region. We then stop briefly in the center of Ostros for 5–10 minutes.
The journey continues toward Shestani, driving through the shade of ancient chestnut trees that have shaped the landscape and identity of this region for centuries. We visit Brisku Poshtë / Donja Briska, a village traditionally connected with Gjon Buzuku, the priest and author of Meshari — the first known book written in the Albanian language, published in 1555.
From there, we continue to the village of Livari, where guests can enjoy another beautiful panoramic viewpoint and the peaceful atmosphere of the Shestani region.
After the cultural and scenic part of the tour, we return toward Ulcinj and stop for a rich traditional lunch at Restaurant Panorama, located along the road in the village of Kravari.
After lunch, we take a 35–40 minute drive back to Ulcinj, returning with new experiences and beautiful memories.
This itinerary combines history, local heritage, panoramic landscapes, traditional villages, chestnut groves, and authentic regional gastronomy.
